Independent Video Game Studio Camouflag has announced that its critically acclaimed episodic action-adventure stealth game République is coming to PlayStation 4 this March. Initially revived through a campaign on KickStarter, République’s release on PS4 coincides with the completion of the title’s fifth episode.
The five-episode République saga is set for release on March 22 meaning PS4 gamers will get the complete package at launch. République will be available as a digital download and in physical disc format. In developing the story driven action and adventure game, Camouflag were heavily influenced by games from the 32-bit era such as classic games on PS one.
République’s storyline follows the fate of Hope, a young woman trapped inside a secret totalitarian nation called Metamorphosis from which players have to guide her to safety over the games’ five episodes. Players will experience the perils of living in a ‘Big Brother’ society and quickly learn that surveillance camera hacking skills are key to survival.
Over the course of the five episodes, players will encounter different environments and new enemies at every level. The games’ accompanying puzzles and theme make for a brilliant gaming experience while also highlighting the thorny issue of security over privacy in the modern age.
A labour of love, it has taken Camouflag five years to complete République and by its own admission, the studio was initially sceptical of porting the PC, Android, and iOS hit to PS4. The biggest barrier according to Paul Alexander, one of the games’ designers, was how to transition the controls in République to the [S4 console’s Dualshock 4 controller.
After many hours of testing, secret prototypes, and a partnership with GungHo Online Entertainment to build the game, a version where players would have complete control of Hope emerged. The rough draft borrowed influences from 32-bit classics like Deep Fear and Metal Gear Solid. Having worked on successful games such as the afore-mentioned Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and F.E.A.R.
In addition to all the work on the games’ controls, Camafloug also built a unique cover system using new motion-captured animations that allowed for a natural flow of perspective and analogue control. There are also new outfits for Hope available in the game in addition to the original selection.
Keeping up with it’s theme of collaborations in bringing République to life Camafloug has also worked with Sony Computer Entertainment to create a Gravity Rush-Inspired PlayStation 4 exclusive outfit for Hope. The game also feature the voice talents of voice-over veterans Jennifer Hale, David Hayter and Dwight Schultz, and Rena Strober as Hope.
Hope’s well designed outfits look awesome and can help players unlock extra features in the game to influence the storyline during play-through’s.
With all the work that has gone into making this game a success and finally available on PS4, République should do well on the console with its existing fanbase and the millions of new PS4 owners that will be converted to the game. Check out the official trailer for the game above for more details.
