Sony has revealed the new name for its PS4 Virtual Reality System initially codenamed Project Morpheus; PlayStation VR. The new official name for the VR headset, announced at the SCEJA Press Conference 2015 in Tokyo, seems to signal a shift from the initial focus on the PlayStation 4 Console to a more broader offering of VR experiences across the PlayStation brand.
The PlayStation VR headset is scheduled to be released in the early part of 2016 and will enter an increasingly competitive market for Virtual Reality products. Headtsets such as the Oculus Rift headset and others show that the race to create VR gaming experiences is truely on.
Playstation VR
Announcing the official PlayStation VR name on the PlayStation EU Blog, Masayasu Ito, the EVP, Division president of PS Product Business and VP, Software Design Division had this to say about the company’s new direction: “The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience.”
Mr Ito also went on to mention that the development of the VR headset will continue prior to the hardware’s launch and that Sony would also continue to develop Virtual Reality content through SCE Worldwide Studios and third party developer’s and publishers.
With the possibilities that Virtual Reality brings to gaming and other industries, Sony is staking it’s claim on the technology and PlayStation VR is the next Logical step. The Japanese tech giant has the resources to develop virtual reality content and experiences from both a hardware and software perspective.
