A Reddit user has revealed what he believes to be the PlayStation 5 release date and launch title details as well as news of PSVR 2. Redditor RuthenicCookie has leaked a number of juicy details about the PlayStation 4 console’s successor. While all the details mentioned are still just rumours, this particular user has some bona fides about them. Prior to the PS5 news leak, RuthenicCookie had correctly predicted that Sony would not be at E3 2019 before the company officially confirmed the same news.
When is the PlayStation 5 Release Date?
First and foremost, – while many will be concerned with the PS5’s release date we here at PS4 Magazine are just pleased that there will indeed be a successor to the PS4 in the first place. Many in the industry have been proclaiming the death of consoles as we know them for a number of years. However, according to RuthenicCookie the PlayStation 5 console is set to be announced sometime next year in 2019.
This will then be followed by the official release of the console, either in March or November of 2020. However, it needs to be stressed that the leaked rumours are unsubstantiated.
And so there you have it; the PS5 is set for release in 2020 if the rumours are to be believed. As mentioned above the Reddit user correctly predicted Sony skipping E3 next year days before Sony confirmed the same news. When quizzed as to the source of his information RuthenicCookie claimed to know a well placed source within the industry. In addition the above details would fit in with the pattern of prior console releases by Sony.
A 2020 release date would make it seven years after the release of the PS4. This is roughly the lifespan of Sony’s prior models such as the PS3. In addition, RuthenicCookie says that Sony is not afraid of the PS5 release cannibalising sales of the PS4 due to its phenomenal success. The current-gen console is on track to achieve over 100 million units sold, a number it should have passed come 2020.
Described as a ‘monster’ the PS5 console will feature a Ryzen 8 core. The introductory price point is said to be $500.
Needless to say the OP has now gained cult status on Reddit due to his leaks.
PlayStation 5 Launch Titles
While RuthenicCookie was quick to point out that Sony’s plans may change, he claims that the new console will be revealed at the PlayStation Experience event in 2019. This also matches the initial reveal of the PS4 console. In addition to details about the PlayStation 5 release date, the Reddit user also revealed details about launch titles and a new version of the PS VR system.
When questioned about launch titles RuthenicCookie confirmed Death Stranding and The Last of us 2 as likely PS5 games. Ghost of Tsushima may also be part of that line-up. Additionally another title that may yet be a PS5 launch title is Anthem. The online multiplayer action RPG is being developed by BioWare and is rumoured to be not working well on current-gen consoles.
Consequently, RuthenicCookie’s source believes the title will be delayed on PS4 and launched on the PS5. From the horses mouth:
“Most developers already have the dev kit for PS55 and from what I’ve heard EA is testing Anthem on it . . . – Anthem is a mess on This gen Consoles, Going to get delayed again”
However, the games lead producer moved quickly to quash those rumours.
PSVR2 Release and Peripherals
There are many tidbits that the poster revealed in response to other Reddit user questions, making the thread worth a read. One popular query was whether the PS5 would be backward compatible with PS4, or even PS3 games. Unfortunately, RuthenicCookie could not confirm or deny that detail.
Moving on to PSVR and RuthenicCookie believes that a new edition of the virtual reality gaming system will also be released. PSVR2 will ditch the breaker box and most likely be included with the PS5 console. In addition, PSVR2 will also likely have a built in camera as opposed to the PlayStation Camera. Sony is also rumoured to be testing virtual reality gloves for use with the new PSVR.
Unfortunately,there is a bit of a wait before RuthenicCookie’s rumours can be confirmed as true or false. Still it’s something to look forward to in 2019 for PlayStation gamers and fans.
