Player Unknown Battleground, or PUBG for short, is one of the most popular online multiplayer games on Xbox and PC at the moment. It has a massive player base on those platforms but it wasn’t available on PS4. There has been a lot of rumours flying around about if and when the developers were going to release a PS4 version. Developers have answered those rumours with a confirmation that the PS4 version of PUBG will be released on the PlayStation Store on 7th December.

So, here’s everything you need to know about PUBG on the PS4.

What Is Player Unknown Battlegrounds?

If you haven’t heard of it already, here is a quick rundown of what exactly PUBG is. It’s an online multiplayer shooter with 100 players in each match, playing on a large map. At the beginning, all players fly over the map and jump from an aircraft when they choose, then parachute down to the ground.

The winner is the last surviving person, or team in the game. There is a solo mode where it’s every man for himself or you can play in pairs, threes or fours. You land on the map with no weapons and you’ll need to scramble around to find weapons and mods for those weapons before you run into any other players. Vehicles will help you to get around the map on land or water, to find the best loot.

There are clusters of buildings dotted around where you’ll find the best equipment but you’re also more likely to run into other players there. Once you’ve found some equipment, you need to start hunting down the competition and taking them out, but there’s a catch.

A circle will appear on the map every so often and the playable area will shrink. If you’re caught outside of the playable area, you’ll start taking damage until you get back inside the circle. If you don’t make it back in time, you’ll eventually die and lose the game. Throughout the game, supply drops with high powered weapons and other equipment will fall from the sky. It’s up to you to survive in the ever decreasing playable area until one person or team remains and is the winner.

So, It’s Basically Like Fortnite?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll be aware of the massively popular Battle Royale mode on Fortnite. You might also think that I’m getting mixed up and describing that instead of PUBG, but there’s no mistake. In terms of gameplay, they are pretty much the same game. However, there are some differences. First off, there is no building system for constructing defences on PUBG and you can also use vehicles to get around which isn’t an option in Fortnite.

The visuals are also very different between the 2; Fortnite is very cartoony while PUBG is going for a more realistic visual. But apart from those differences, the 2 games are incredibly similar. So similar, in fact, there was a lawsuit between the 2 developers.

PUBG came out first and then Fortnite followed. Unsurprisingly, the developers of PUBG saw Fortnite and thought it looked a little too familiar and it was even built on the same engine. So, they launched a lawsuit against them. After a lot of deliberation, the lawsuit was eventually dropped and precedent was set for other games to follow suit and release their own Battle Royale modes. Call of Duty Black Ops 4 was the most recent game to do so.

So, yeah, it’s a lot like Fortnite but it’s a more adult game that is quite a lot more tactical. If you like the idea of a battle royale mode but you’re not convinced by Fortnite because you think it’s a kids game, PUBG might be the game for you.

What Will It Cost?

This is an important question because Fortnite, PUBG’s biggest rival, is free to play on the PS4 right now. They make all of their money from people buying in-game currency for cosmetic items but if you don’t want to spend anything, it won’t affect your performance in the game or put you at a disadvantage in terms of weapons.

So, is PUBG going to follow suit? Sadly, no.

At the moment, the price is rumoured to be $30 for the base game, $50 for a survivors issue and $60 for the champions issue. The premium versions come with extra content like skins for your characters and some extra in-game currency. However, there have been rumours that PUBG will be released as one of the free monthly games on the PlayStation Store shortly after it’s release. Bear in mind that this is only rumoured and hasn’t been confirmed so don’t bet on it.

How Do You Win in PUBG?

In preparation for the release on the 7th December, here are some great tips on how to come out on top in a game of PUBG. First off, you need to get yourself a headset if you haven’t got one already. Check out this list of the best PlayStation4 wireless headsets if you don’t know what you’re looking for. This game is best played in teams, preferably with friends, so you can coordinate and watch each others backs. Working as a single unit is essential to survival on PUBG.

Landing in the right place is the next step. The places with the best loot are usually the places with the most buildings but that’s where everybody is going. When you’re first starting out, it might be better to land in more secluded areas where you won’t get as much loot but you’ll have a bit more breathing room to get yourself set up. Check out this guide to the best loot spots to get yourself acquainted.

Lastly, you need to stay on the move at all times. You always need to make sure you’re going to get into the circle in time so don’t stray too far. Loot an area and then move on, especially if you’re in an open area because you can easily get picked off.

Those are just the basics and it’ll take you a while to get to grips with the best guns and armour and work out your own specific play style before you’ve got a chance of winning.

So, there you have it. That’s everything you need to know about the PUBG release on PS4 on the 7th December. Are you going to get it?
